How to “Flex” Your Behavior – Part 4 of 4

How well do you recognize and adjust to different behavior styles in others? Over the past few weeks, we’ve been discussing simple strategies to help you adapt your approach based on the behavior patterns you observe in those around you.

For instance, it’s easy to spot when you’re interacting with someone who’s relationally focused. These individuals tend to smile often, use a wide range of facial expressions, and are comfortable expressing their emotions. They usually show a genuine interest in how you feel. This behavior is often seen as verbal, expressive, and informal.

When you encounter someone with this style, here are four key actions you can take to make a more positive, impactful connection.

  • SHARE WHAT YOU ARE THINKING AND FEELING: Expressing your thoughts and emotions helps soften any impression of being “cold” or distant. If you’re someone who tends to focus more on thoughts and ideas, it might feel challenging, but opening up makes you seem more approachable and relatable. Even if it’s not your default, sharing feelings allows you to better connect with responsive individuals and makes communication a more positive experience for them.
  • VALIDATE OTHERS’ FEELINGS: Responsive people often use emotions to build connections. It’s important to acknowledge and respect their feelings as a legitimate part of the conversation. Dismissing or ignoring their emotions can erode trust and make it harder for them to connect with you.
  • TAKE TIME TO SOCIALIZE: Engaging in small talk can help others feel more at ease, especially in unfamiliar settings. Responsive individuals appreciate it when you show personal interest in them. By taking the time to chat and connect on a personal level, you build rapport, strengthen trust, and create a more comfortable environment.
  • LINK JOB GOALS TO PEOPLE: When working on a task or project, connect it to the people involved. Consider and discuss how the work may or may not align with the personal interests or values of others. This personal focus communicates a degree of emotional investment, which is meaningful for those with a responsive style.
