Why People Skills?

Individuals are influenced by the people, situations and events in their lives, but motivation comes from within. People have different needs, yet everyone is motivated by several basic needs, including a sense of self-respect and personal value. We need to know that we are making a positive difference. When those basic needs are fulfilled, people are motivated to help their team or organization succeed.

Historically, organizations attempt to improve team success and team productivity by focusing on technical skill development. However, research and experience with teams makes it clear that the development of quality relationships is as important to team success as is the development of technical skills.

The challenge is HOW to cause collaboration, HOW to cause cooperation and HOW to develop quality relationships. We need to discover new ways of working and solving problems together. People skills are an essential part of making that happen.
